Don’t miss the five-part Max docuseries Brené Brown: Atlas of the Heart!
In Atlas of the Heart, Brown takes us on a journey through eighty-seven of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. As she maps the necessary skills and an actionable framework for meaningful connection, she gives us the language and tools to access a universe of new choices and second chances—a universe where we can share and steward the stories of our bravest and most heartbreaking moments with one another in a way that builds connection.
Over the past two decades, Brown’s extensive research into the experiences that make us who we are has shaped the cultural conversation and helped define what it means to be courageous with our lives. Atlas of the Heart draws on this research, as well as on Brown’s singular skills as a storyteller, to show us how accurately naming an experience doesn’t give the experience more power—it gives us the power of understanding, meaning, and choice.
Brown shares, “I want this book to be an atlas for all of us, because I believe that, with an adventurous heart and the right maps, we can travel anywhere and never fear losing ourselves.”

aka The Encyclopedia of Emotions
This book might best be described as ‘The Encyclopedia of Emotions.’ It covers (pretty much) all the emotions we might feel in our lives, including the ones that make us feel good, like joy and wonder, and the ones that make us feel bad, like shame and envy. We are all human, and therefore susceptible to feeling any and all emotions on a daily basis, and it is therefore paramount for our personal growth to understand our feelings. What is the purpose of Brown’s toil in these expansive emotional fields? The desire to help people better connect with one another. (After all, what is life without other people to experience it with?) She defines connection as “the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued, when they can give and receive without judgment, and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.” We are all emotional creatures, and being able to communicate our thoughts and feelings to one another is what strengthens our social bonds.Brown helps us achieve emotional understanding via her focus on language. “Language does more than just communicate emotion, it can actually shape what we’re feeling,” she writes. “When we don’t understand how our emotions shape our thoughts and decisions, we become disembodied from our own experiences and disconnected from each other.” Our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors all work together, and a large part of their connection is our own understanding of their relationship inside of us. This understanding hinges on our ability to properly label our emotions—the central theme of Brown’s work.Developing this social communication starts with our own self-communication because if I don’t know and understand who I am and what I need, want, and believe, I can’t share myself with you. “I need to be connected to myself, in my own body, and learning what makes me work” in order to develop the grounded confidence I need to move through the world and cultivate meaningful connections with others. This is one of the oldest philosophical maxims—the words “Know Thyself” having been found inscribed upon the Temple of Apollo in the Ancient Greek precinct of Delphi. In this emotional encyclopedia, I found some definitions for emotions surprising and thought-provoking. For example, Brown describes shame as the birthplace of perfectionism. Healthy striving is internally driven, she correctly observes, meanwhile perfectionism is “externally driven by a simple but potentially all-consuming question: What will people think?” For another example, she defines narcissism as “the shame-based fear of being ordinary.” This really gave me much to think about: When we fear that society will judge us improperly (or negatively), we might attempt to control the narrative ourselves, which can often lead to narcissistic behavior. Fear and shame dictate many of our behaviors, a sentiment I plan to try and observe within myself going forward. With over eighty different emotions defined and discussed in this tome, it is designed to be revisited whenever we need a refresher. This book can help us put words to feelings, aiding us in understanding both ourselves and others. As it says on the cover, Brown’s work is designed to help us understand the language of human experience and use these tools to further develop meaningful connections. It is a wonderful guide to the emotional world and an excellent almanac for increasing our emotional intelligence.

Every human should read this! 😊
Wow! What a great, informative, profound book!It describes the human experience and writes about the emotions we All encounter as we go about living life. It has helped me ‘name’ feelings I didn’t realize I was having. I feel like it’s armed and equipped me with basic, emotion/experience knowledge that will aid me in living my life. I recently bought one to give as a gift. A friend said her teen was having a lot of anxiety and that she wasn’t sure that she (mom) really knew how to talk about feelings and identifying them. That she was feeling ill-equipped in her own life and that she was afraid it would affect her ability to help her daughter. I immediately thought of this book. I looked and found a good book on dealing specifically with teens and anxiety and then also ordered a copy of Atlas of the Heart. I gifted both to her. She was thrilled. My hope is that it will help inform and equip them as it did for me!I’d DEFINITELY recommend.Happy reading!

Lets be open about how I see Brene Brown. I have read all her books, many twice. For those who know her other material you know you are going to cry at some point. Those tears have always been about connections gained, lost or missed.I have purchased this book in its physical form which is well worth it because of the nature of its layout. I have now purchased it on kindle for the purpose of further study and portability. However also for the the additional purpose of leaving a review. I want to leave a review because I see other reviews that are completely missing the point. This book is a map not a book of answers. Maps represent possibility it is up to you if you want to go on the adventure. Your individuality and uniqueness make it impossible to find direct answers as to what you require to become whole. You have to use the map and be willing to go on the journey. Now about the crying…Brene is getting closer to truths. The other books two or three good bawls each. This one I am now only one sixth completed and already have surpassed all the others.I am in the journey, following the map. It is scary, painful, but in a certain way provides the elation of freedom after going through the pain. Thanks to Brene and her team for this.I have now finished the book over a two day read marathon. My opinion of the content has not changed. Still very positive. As noted this becomes your own personal journey, I found it worthwhile and will re-read the book again very soon. Yes, I found it that important. An interesting thing about the physical book and all it’s emotional content I found myself stroking the book and pages as if to make a connection with the book. The physical form of the book makes it a worth while purchase. The layout of the book creates a connection of sorts with the content of the book. I don’t have answers about this, I just found it interesting.I wish you well on your own journey.
