Hoping to win back his estranged swimming coach wife (Esther Williams), a love-struck songwriter (Red Skelton) enrolls in a women’s college, and graduates summa cum laude in comedy! Red’s in rare form and Esther’s in formfitting swimsuits in this delightfully musical farce. Bathing Beauty begins with a splash: Xavier Cugat plays, Red clowns and Esther plunges into a pool. And from there things go, well, swimmingly. The college is lauded with pretty M-G-M starlets. Cugie shakes up more hot South American rhythms. Harry James swings into help North American sounds, and a fine cast including Basil Rathbone, Donald Meek, Janis Paige, and Margaret Dumont give expert support. The finale is a wowser of a water ballet, featuring Hollywood’s favorite bathing beauty swimming gracefully along alternating jets of water and flame. But Esther isn’t the only artistic lovely. When production began, the film’s title was Mr. Co-Ed, with Skelton positioned to be the center of attraction, but M-G-M soon found out as filming continued, that the film was going to catapult Esther Williams into screen super-stardom, leading to the film being released with the title Bathing Beauty with Esther becoming one of the studio’s biggest stars in a series of Technicolor aquatic entertainments for over a decade.

Una excelente restauración hecha por TCM.Los números musicales siguen siendo lo mejor de este filme, especialmente la secuencia final que sigue siendo espectacular.

A Great Comedy!
Esther Williams is known for her swimming and light romance/musical films. This is a great comedy with Red Skelton. I thought it was a nice change of pace and well done. The music is first class and in my opinion it’s worth buying for the musical numbers alone. There’s a fabulous organ piece, a hilarious take on an Irish Ballad with Harry James and his Music Makers as well as music by Xavier Cugat who I absolutely love and is a big reason why I buy the Esther Williams movies. Esther Wms and Red Skelton marry but the wedding is interrupted by a woman hired by Red’s publisher to make false accusations again Red Skelton, claiming he is her husband and father of their 3 children. Esther returns to her job in an all-girl school w/a loophole in their charter that allows Red to register as a student. The laughs and music never stop. It’s a very entertaining and lovely film. The VHS was great quality and I’m very happy with it.

I love this old movie and will never stop watching it even 20 years from now. Red is so talented and Ester is the most beautiful swimmer ever!!

Youth revisited!
Bathing Beauty was a musical visit to my youth; rekindling memories of WW 2 and Senior School. Williams swimming scenes and stylish strokes and the music (especially Ethel Smith on the Hammond organ) made watching the movie fun, especially as those instruments, which combined harmonics to synthesise the sound(s) desired, were so versatile once one understood the function of the drawbars. I think this is the movie which best displays the sound of the Hammond, now, unfortunately, almost extinct!My “talks” on “The Big Band Era” will be enriched by the other bands featured too.

Il film in sé non vale niente ed è addirittura noioso, ma le performances musicali e “natatorie” lo rendono UNICO. E’ poi un perfetto documento di un particolare momento storico: è infatti stato girato nel 1944: noi eravamo al nostro minimo storico, e loro potevano girare film del genere.
