    Age appropriate, easy read
After kids of research for the right intro to puberty book for or 10 year old, we landed in this one. The author writes in a way that is easy to read and relatable to boys that age. It does not come across preachy or condescending, but more like a big brother or trusted friend who’s talking to them. I didn’t feel like it went into too much detail about things he’s not ready for yet. And everything was written in a simple, chill, matter-of-fact way. We are super open and had already discussed some of this with our son as well as how babies are made etc. We have always answered questions as they come, as well as checking with him to see if he had any questions in our regular conversations. So a lot of this wasn’t completely new to him. However it got through to him better than we could. When your mom and dad say it’s important to put your deodorant on and shower everyday, kids probably feel like it’s just another naggy thing parents want you to do. But when they read it in a book or a cool big brother figure tells them and even explains it (likely just as the parents had), it clicks in their brain. My son stopped fighting us on the daily shower after reading this and he is taking better care of his skin. I’m glad we purchased this one! It’s an awesome and helpful book that I wish was around for my brothers!

    Must read for boys
I have two young boys. And it seems like they get a lot of misinformation from school. This book was great! It’s like a graphic novel and went over all kinds of information.

Love this book for my 12 year old son!
Being as I’m a female, explaining some topics can be uncomfortable for both mother and son. This is a good way to break the ice on topics as they get older when you know puberty is right around the corner. I was very happy with the topics covered as coming into the teenage years for boys I’m sure can be confusing. It goes from simple topics like personal hygiene, acne, growing pains, safe and not safe touching, emotions, and feelings all the way up to the stages of physical changes boys will notice as they mature. I feel at 12 years old it’s appropriate to have knowledge about all of these topics in this book. It gives the perfect amount of information for your preteen or teenager.

Perfect for a first book about puberty
A few years ago, I got The Care and Keeping of You, the girls version of this book, for my 10 y/o daughter and it was really helpful for her. So when I was looking for a book for my 10 y/o son to guide our first discussions about puberty, I went right back to this American Girl series. He found this book informative and helpful. The book really only focuses on the changes boys will experience during puberty, not sex or reproduction.

Amazing book for relevant, meaningful information written in a fun, easy manner.
This is not the first “body book” I bought for my sons, but it’s the first one I kept and wanted to read myself.- If you have a kid with poor hygiene and you want to provide a resource for EVERY aspect, including how to safely clean intact penises, this book is excellent.- If your son is about to go through puberty and you want a book to explain the weird, awkward experiences of possessing a penis (nighttime ejaculations, involuntary erections, etc) without going into all the details of sex, this book is amazing.- If you want to educate a new mother on what the heck their son will be going through and facing as he grows up, this book is amazing.- If you want to teach girls on why their male classmates are suddenly super-awkward in many respects when they approach puberty, this book is amazing. Both of my boys (10yo and 7yo) have read significant portions of it already without complaint, and they retained enough that they talked about various things they learned with me after the fact. My kids are outliers for reading ability, so I cannot speak to whether other kids their age could do the same, but it is an interesting and well-written book for those comfortable with reading. This book is amazing.

    MUST HAVE
I got this for my 10yr old and he really enjoyed it. He’s just starting to go through changes and this helped him lead conversation and had some really good questions for us. I would suggest this to any 10-13 year old boy for sure!

Excellent Boy Version of The Care and Keeping of You!
I accidentally came across this book via an American Girl FB post. I was so excited to see a boy’s version of the girl’s book that I know and love. This book didn’t disappoint. It is literally the boy version of The Care and Keeping of You. It talks about taking care of your body, the changes you will see in your body, etc. For those who are wondering how in detail it gets with “boy” stuff, there is a two page spread on the different stages of growth and there are cartoon drawings to show each stage (penis/testicle/pubic hair.) There is a section that talks about circumcision and explains what it is. There is also a two page spread that talks about erections, how to hide them if it accidentally happens when you’re with people, and there are a couple paragraphs about nocturnal emissions/wet dreams. This book does not go into sex or sexuality, which I love because I don’t think that’s appropriate for the age group the book is written for. The nocturnal emission part is tasteful and done from a scientific perspective only, i.e. it is a normal part of growing up and it is nothing to be embarrassed about, and don’t worry, it’s not pee. It doesn’t go into anything further than that. Overall I am very happy with this book! Oh yeah- one more thing- there is no “American Girl” branding on the front of the book, but it does have it mentioned inside the front cover, probably where most boys wouldn’t read anyway. 🙂

My nearly 12 years old son noticed a recent change when he was taking his shower, but felt very embarrassed to discuss it with me. When the book came in, he took it to his room and read it from front cover to back immediately. It describes puberty and body hygiene in a very matter-of-fact way, with simple and easy words, and funny illustrations. He felt much relieved after that, and it opened the discussion between us. He has been re-reading some parts of it, and even showed it to his best friend. As a result he has asked me to do a few changes in his hygiene routine, and I am very happy that he is decided to take good care of his own body.Very definitely recommend it.
