Powerless: A Small Town Friends to Lovers Romance
$0.99
Two childhood friends. Two broken hearts. One impromptu road trip to get away from everything. That’s all this was supposed to be. After all, I’ve been living in the friend zone for years now.
But hockey heartthrob Jasper Gervais isn’t looking at me like a friend anymore. And he isn’t touching me like one either.
To his fans, he’s the handsome, talented athlete on TV. To me, he’s still the lost boy with sad eyes and a heart of gold.
The man I’ve loved in secret for years.
So when my life falls apart on my wedding day, it only makes sense that he’s the one to swoop in and save me. And when his world comes crashing down around him, I’m there to return the favor.
But the more time we spend alone, the more Jasper doesn’t feel like a friend at all. He feels like everything I’ve ever wanted and thought I could never have.
Our feelings aren’t straightforward though. They twist and turn around the pain of his past and the reality of my present.
Jasper Gervais acts like he wants me.
But after years of turning me away, he’s going to need to prove it.

Loving this series
All of these characters have been so well written with depth and something to reel you in. This book was actually quite long in comparison to other books of this genre, but it didn’t feel long at all. You just want to listen to more and more of their story. Their story is lovely and beautiful and tragic and heartfelt. And the family in these stories is just wonderful. Biological or not, we choose our family and our family chooses us. And these guys all chose so well to have people in their corner. Having Beau missing was awful. He didn’t make an appearance until almost the very end (other than on the phone). But don’t pretend that’s a spoiler, we all know they weren’t going to off one of the main characters in this type of book. I’m really looking forward to his book and to Winter’s book. And I love that summer and winter are slowly reconnecting. It’s such a lovely read for them as well as they grow as sisters for the first time really. 💙

It’s a slow burn, but once that switch flips….watch out!
I’m late to the Elsie Silver train, but I’m so glad I’m here now.I started the Chestnut Springs series this year and I’m hooked. After having Jasper in the background of the previous books, it was nice to see where he came from and how he’d gotten there. That boy was broken by his family, but fortunately he had another family take him in and make them theirs. Thank goodness for the EatonsPowerless is Sloan and Jasper’s story and they are kind of sort of not really cousins. From the moment they met each other when they were just kids, they had something between them. Well, at least Sloan did. She saw Jasper and he was it for her. But time and age and life got in the middle of everything and they went their separate ways. Jasper making a name for himself in the NHL and Sloan becoming a ballerina. But Jasper was always there for Sloan, even when Sloan didn’t recognize it. When it comes time for Sloan to make a commitment she doesn’t want to, Jasper (and the rest of the Eatons) are there just waiting in the wing.I don’t know how much I enjoyed the slow burn of this story because honestly, after Jasper breaks Sloan free, I just wanted them to give in to all their past feelings. Or give me the angst and sexual tension. I felt like it was just simmer below the surface as opposed to burning hot, which I would’ve preferred. BUT when you have a broken tortured soul like Jasper’s, it takes something more. And Sloan gave it. She knew what she wanted, but had to figure out how to get it. This was the story of friends to lovers, roadtrip, forced proximity, one bed with a side of unrequited love. While it was slow to start, once these two got on the road and had nothing but one on one time to open up to each other, it built a little slow. Then when they arrived at their destination some sort of switch happened for Jasper and BAM!! We went from 0 to 100 like that. They gave in and they realized that they had always been more and they 100% deserved each other.I enjoyed Powerless and seeing Jasper grow into the man he was meant to be and to finally accept that he needs to be seen. Not only Jasper, but Sloan as well. For her to step up to her dad and ex was a queen move. When you give yourself the power back, good things can happen. While it did take a bit to get there, it was nice to see these two improve as individuals, but also need one another.Overall, I’m really enjoying this small town romance series. I love the texts that come at the beginning of the chapters and almost always make me laugh at loud. The whole cast of characters are fun and sexy and make the story that much more enjoyable. Powerless gave me a feeling of growth for the characters and I loved seeing them figure themselves out as individuals and as a couple. With the little taste we got at the end of Powerless, I’m really looking forward to the next book. It’s going to bring that tension that I love.

Jasper & Sloane – best friends to HEA
Another excellent read from author Elsie Silver. I can’t WAIT to read this entire series again, like going back for a 2nd piece of pie at Thanksgiving ;)In Powerless, we learn why Jasper has such deep sadness in his soul. In the first two books, there are simply allusions to him having a less than stellar home life. What he really had was a shattered childhood. But Harvey and the Eaton boys took him in when he had lost everything.Sloane and Jasper met when she was 10 and he was 16. Sloane took one look at Jasper and fell head over heels for him – for the next 18 years. She tried to grow herself out of it, but the facts were simply that he was her person and she was his. It was just a matter of time. What she doesn’t realize that she’s merely a pawn in the eyes of her father – he’s basically just been grooming her for an arranged marriage that has absolutely nothing to do with love.I just love Harvey and his horrible jokes and his old farmer’s wisdom. What a wonderful character. I also loved Sloane’s mother, and I’m kind of hoping for a future romance between these two, even if Harvey was already married to Cordelia’s sister.I’m not a really big fan of the MMC taking on that 110% controlling alpha mode in the bedroom (or kitchen, whatever). And the edging? Ooof. I do understand why Jasper takes on that persona, as it’s probably the only thing in his life he’s ever been able to control. I just wish that it wasn’t 98% of the time. I love the scenes where the lovemaking becomes something more than just the characters, that true and simple melding of souls in a physical manifestation. And yes, I do realize that Sloane can take control if she wants it – I just wish Jasper knew that she is the last person on earth who he needs that control for.Excellent story, well done. Just a fraction under Reckless in my rankings of my favorite Chestnut Springs books.Sweet Scale: 4/5Spicy Scale: 4.5/5

This one book is my least favorite of all 5🤭BUT! I still loved the characters, they are all so funny and loveable and you get to meet them in every book so of course the story is still going to be good! 4/5⭐️ just because i didn’t finish it as fast as the rest of them, i couldn’t put down the others😍

This had to be Elsie’s worst book in this series…Sloane and Jasper had as much chemistry as oil and water.Their “friendship” was barely touched on, nor were their pasts or the hardships they endured. This book was very much tell and not show. Silver tells you that Sloane and Jasper are best friends and yet… neither of them know anything about the other’s personal lives.Jasper had to be the worst written MMC in contemporary romance in the last few years. His character was a walking contradiction. This was a disappointing addition to the Chestnut Springs Series. I don’t think anything can top Cade and Willa’s story tbh.
