At the time i bought this i had owned a ‘Kwikset featuring SmartKey SmartCode Single Cylinder Electronic Deadbolt, Satin Nickel 909 15 SMT CP’ for 1 years time. then decided to change after the mechanism in the kwikset malfunction and Kwiksets replacement unit did not even work on arrival. there is a fundamental flaw in them that is NOT in the Schlage which I will discuss.My first impressions on this deadbolt were the same as my keyed entry lock+ door handle unit that i had bought a year prior. right out of the box, everything was in the box, very detailed instructions for both installation of the deadbolt and operation of the deadbolt and the incredible ‘rock solid’ feel of the Schlage brand.Installation:Installation is a breeze if you have any experience with door locks or slim to none. even with no experience i would find it strange if someone didn’t think that the install process on this deadbolt was easy. If you have no experience, just follow the very detailed instructions that come with it. Took me less than 10 minutes to install. One thing i would note on the installation that i have never seen another deadbolt that i have bought come with was a ‘reinforcement’ plate for the door frame. it comes with very long screws as well to secure it incredible well into the door frame making it leaps and bounds more difficult for someone to kick in the door. the reinforcement plate i noticed felt like a different type of metal than everything else. Very solid and maybe 2-3 thicker than an average door plate.Operation/Features:Unlike my kwikset unit that i owned that actually operates a small internal motor(the part that is prone to failure on the Kwikset Unit) this Schlage deadbolt has a ‘freespinning’ lock unless the lock is ‘engaged’ in which case the ‘freespinning’ lock actually becomes like a ‘handle’ that you manually turn. the lock is engaged always from the manual switch from the back(what would be the inside of the home or building) or while it is unlocked and you hit the ‘Schlage’ button on the front of the unit for 5 seconds while the light is blinking. while the light blinks the lock is engaged and you turn with your hand from the outside to lock. To unlock from the outside is just as easy, enter your 4 digit code, the Schlage light will blink yellow for 5 seconds and your lock will rotate like a handle when you turn it to unlock your door. Really couldn’t get easier operation than this without an automatic electric motor. (but again, like in the Kwikset which has this, it is prone to failure) Of course another feature on the lock, keyed backup in case the battery dies before you can replace it.Keypad:The keypad is very bright when you press the Schlage button as it illuminates to a very bright blue. Enter code and presto, access to whatever lies behind the door with a flick of the wrist. I will not go into the operation on how to program the keypad as it is very straightforward and simple if you follow the manufacturers instructions on how to add/remove codes and enter a few different modes.Battery:My lock came with a 9v Duracell (shocking not a Chinese off brand battery?!) and the biggest difference i can note between this Schlage lock and my keypad+door handle Schlage is the battery compartment is WAY easier to get to. on the keypad + door handle unit, you must remove the entire lock from the door in order to access the battery compartment to change and the battery is on the outside of the unit(closer to the elements reduces battery life). On the Deadbolt however, the compartment is accessed by just removing the two back screws of the unit and removing this ‘cover’ plate. the battery is right there, the rest of the lock stays intact and the compartment is on the INSIDE of the door, away from the elements to help preserve the battery life.Final Thoughts:Just like my other Schlage unit, i am EXTREMELY satisfied with both operation, instructions, ease of use and Quality of this product. I really have no complaints. I will definitely be a repeat customer if i keep getting these fantastically designed and made locks.

I replaced a Schlage keyed deadbolt with this combination item. It works very well.A combination lock allows my kids to open the door without having to keep a key. While I used to be “latch key kid” myself, my own kids are never home alone. Nevertheless, I might send them to the door with bags/groceries etc. while I’m still at the car. When we come back from walking the dog, they can open the door for me. I have confidence knowing they’ll never be locked out.A combination lock means my wife and I don’t have to carry keys. My wife has an electronic fob for her car, and my car uses a switch and starter button (old school). Eliminating the house key means no more keys at all.Brass metal keys, including Schlage and Kwikset have too much toxic lead in them. So much that they’ve been sued by State’s governments but they are unlikely to change. Not having to handle a key reduces exposure to lead.The lock functions well. It was easy to install (to replace existing deadbolt) and the result was the cylinder turns easily, it fits properly, and works smoothly. Locking and unlocking from inside is just a turn of the large lever. Locking from outside involves pushing the top “Schlage” button and turning the knob to lock the deadbolt. Unlocking from outside, you can either enter the 4 digit combo into the keypad and turn the knob, or you can press the Schlage button to illuminate the keypad and then enter the combo and turn the knob.A 4 digit combo is quick and secure enough for the level of security this whole product is intended for. It provides for more than 3000 possible combinations, so a brute force attack on the combination is not as likely as a brute force attack on the door jamb or window. This is not a high security product, as it is intended for doors that can be kicked in, breached with a ram, or bypassed. The buttons appear to be durable and not likely to soon reveal discrepancies in use, but the combination can be changed easily to level the use of different buttons. The lock also supports multiple combinations, and therefore temporary combinations.I looked at alternatives, but determined this simple option is best. I imagine future cars (and houses) will have two-factor authentication to use — you’ll need to have something (probably a digital certificate with private key on your smartphone device) and to know something (a PIN), but you’ll probably have an (slightly less secure) option to pre-enter or save the PIN so that you’ll be able to open the door or use the car just by being near it. This combination lock won’t unlock just because you’re nearby, but it is a pretty easy PIN to enter. I looked at alternatives that include Bluetooth or Wifi connectivity, but they all involved a proprietary service with subscription or a device that was too expensive and unproven.I don’t have long term results for this product yet, but expect it will fair well for several years to come. The brushed nickel finish on my Schlage door set failed with peeling varnish after about 5 years. I would have thought it would be nickel plated, but apparently they coat it in some kind of plastic varnish and it comes off. Because of that, I also doubt this combo deadbolt product is really brushed nickel, but instead it is probably the same fake painted-on finish.Edit: It’s 2 years later and this lock continues to work brilliantly. I bought another for the door between the garage and house. Before I bought the second, I looked into “smart” locks and what’s available today. The best feature they offer is automatic locking/relocking so you don’t have to remember to lock the door on the way out — but any lock that uses a motor to move the deadbolt is going to run the battery down faster and will depend on good alignment of the bolt with the strikeplate. My door is not misaligned, but the reality is that changing temperature and humidity causes the door frame to move. I think I prefer to use a little muscle and lock the door myself rather than depending on Alexa to do it for me. With this lock, I don’t even need to bother with a key to lock or unlock it. It’s great.

Schlage keyless entry deadbolt
Bought this to replace one of the same earlier models. That they offer you an extended warranty seems pretty useless, because my last one broke after about 8 years, and listed on the box is “lifetime warranty” which is also pretty useless.The last one stopped allowing me to lock it, the battery condition didn’t matter.Also the in the box instructions how to change the entry code were useless. I had to find an online video which walked me through the process.Also on the one I replaced, the coating deteriorated so it looked pretty rough – both were satin chrome finish. I still like the convenience and, when it works, it works great.

I can’t believe we went so long using keys like cavemen. In the olden days of last week, if we wanted to start our car to run for a minute or two because the latest polar vortex has swept in from the north, we had to remember to bring another set of keys to lock the deadbolt or we would have to shut the car off then go back and lock the door and then restart the car… madness.This all changed this past weekend. I got up the courage to enlarge the holes on our door so I could swap out the deadbolt for this glorious piece of technology. The instructions were fine, the only confusion was the back plate that is inside the house has a cam that must be vertical or the lock will not work.Once it was installed, the programming was very straight forward and easy to do. You can have 19 different user codes which can be disabled at any time. The keypad DOES light up when you push a key which is great for when you run late and forget to leave the outside light on.The action on this lock is a neat idea as well. You have to manually turn the deadbolt to lock and unlock (reviews I have read say this helps prolong the battery life) If the keypad is not engaged, this knob spins freely. To lock, you just have to push the Schlage button, which engages the knob and allows you to lock the door. To unlock, key in your code to engage it, then twist to unlock, too easy.Over all I am very happy with this and wish I had gotten one long ago. It is a heavy well built lock that has a bunch of great reviews around the web.The only negative thing I can say is that it only comes with one key. I wish it had two, but I can get another cut easily.

We now have two of these. Our first we bought some years ago in a Black Friday sale whilst in the USA. If this new one is anything like our existing one then we’ll have no complaints. Our first one is used daily & has been 100% reliable & looks as new as the day we bought it. Feels & looks strongly made, surprisingly easy to fit (we think!) Highly recommended.
