A Treasure Trove for Animation Lovers and Aspiring Creators!
I got my hands on The Art of DreamWorks The Wild Robot Deluxe Edition, and wow—it’s beyond anything I expected. Every page feels like a journey into the minds of the artists and creators who brought this story to life. If you love animation or even dream of creating something special, this book is pure gold. The exclusive sketches, storyboards, and character designs offer an inside look that’s both inspiring and mind-blowing. I especially loved the insight from writer-director Chris Sanders—seeing his storyboards and concept art feels like getting a personal tour of the creative process. There’s so much heart here, from early sketches to finished visuals, and each detail captures the adventure and warmth of The Wild Robot. This is a must-have if you’re a fan of the original story or just love seeing the magic behind the scenes. It’s not just a book; it’s a window into the passion, artistry, and hard work that make animated movies unforgettable. Highly recommended for anyone with a creative spark!

    Simply gorgeous art book
For such an undoubtedly beautiful movie, it’s no surprise the art book is equally as beautiful. If you’re a fan of the movie, or are already on the fence about getting this book, do it!!!!! Each page is filled with paragraphs, sketches, concept art, and storyboards that gives real insight into the passion, love, and hard work that went into creating quite possibly one of the best animated films of all time.

    Stunningly Beautiful Art Book
This book is absolutely stunning! It showcases the art of The Wild Robot, one of the best animated movies to ever come out of studio Dreamworks Animation (and the most beautiful film they’ve ever made). The art is gorgeous to look at and there is also text which provides insight into the creative process and development that went into making this movie what it is. A shoe-in for Best Animated Feature for 2025’s Oscars.

    When Kindness is the Superpower
If you’ve seen The Wild Robot, you’ll know that this animated film explores themes of parenting and the importance of letting a child spread their wings when they’re ready. This book serves as a perfect companion to the film—a guide that takes you through four seasons, beginning with summer. It tells the story of the creation of the characters, provides detailed scene descriptions, explores their meanings, and highlights kindness as a profound bond that unites us all, leading to the greater good.★★★★★ ArtAs with most good art books, this one is packed with character sketches, a wide range of landscapes, and even rough 3D models of locations and scenes. After The Art of How to Train Your Dragon 2, my first art book, I was deeply impressed by the creativity and talent of Nico Marley, the character designer who worked on that film. His original ideas and artwork are sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who sees them. Imagine my surprise when I started reading The Art of DreamWorks The Wild Robot and came across the first sketches of Roz, one of the main characters, drawn in Marley’s unmistakable style. Many of his character designs are featured here, and it’s a real pleasure to study them in detail. On the other hand, while the book is filled with stunning landscapes and island panoramas, they aren’t as striking as the character designs.★★★☆☆ TextThere’s a lot of text in this book, which I usually enjoy in art books. However, in this case, the writing is extremely descriptive. It doesn’t offer many interesting stories about the creative process, instead focusing on explaining the scenes in the film as if they were directed by David Lynch, making them feel confusing without the additional context. Additionally, the text is often filled with self-praise, constantly emphasizing how talented the team is and how difficult it was to create each specific scene and update tools—yet somehow, they managed. If you’re familiar with “The Art of…” books, you’ll know exactly what I mean by this style of writing, as some authors like using it.★★★★☆ Book DesignThis is a classic DreamWorks art book. It’s in landscape format and features a sturdy jacket that won’t tear or get creased after a few readings. The layouts are well-organized, with images placed thoughtfully and the text easy to read. However, there is one design flaw I found particularly annoying: the odd splitting of sentences across pages. For example, you might read part of a sentence on page 44, then turn the page to find unrelated text blocks with quotes, only to continue the sentence on page 49. This forces you to flip back to page 44, re-read the beginning of the sentence, and then continue from where it left off on page 49. There are several instances like this in the book, which I feel is an unprofessional design choice that shows little regard for the reader’s experience.★★★★☆ PriceThis book offers good value for the price. While new copies are widely available, prices vary between $45 and $77 as of December 2024. I was fortunate to get my copy a couple of weeks before Black Friday at a discounted price of $24.99, so it’s definitely worth hunting for a good deal.★★★★☆ Overall ImpressionsThe Wild Robot follows in the artistic footsteps of films like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), Arcane (2021), Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), the recent Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023). The book does a fantastic job of reflecting this trend. I enjoy seeing how the animation industry is evolving and how new technologies are supporting these changes. DreamWorks has created yet another masterpiece, and it was a pleasure to be invited behind the scenes with The Art of DreamWorks: The Wild Robot.

Now, usually I don’t write reviews but this art book was such an owe to look at. From each page you can really tell the love and passion that went into each frame of the movie. Highly recommend this book if your studying digital painting (which is what I’m using this book for).
