In troubled times there is an urgency to understand ourselves and our world. We have so many questions, and they tug at us night and day, consciously and unconsciously. In this important volume, Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh – one of the most revered spiritual leaders in the world today – reveals an art of living in mindfulness that helps us answer life’s deepest questions and experience the happiness and freedom we desire.

Thich Nhat Hanh presents, for the first time, seven transformative meditations that open up new perspectives on our lives, our relationships, and our interconnectedness with the world around us. Based on the last full talks before his sudden hospitalization, and drawing on intimate examples from his own life, Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how these seven meditations can free us to live happy, peaceful, and active lives and face ageing and dying with curiosity and joy and without fear.

Containing the essence of the Buddha’s teachings and Thich Nhat Hanh’s poignant, timeless, and clarifying prose, The Art of Living provides a spiritual dimension to our lives. This is not an effort to escape life or to dwell in a place of bliss outside of this world. Instead this path will allow us to discover where we come from and where we are going. And, most of all, it will generate happiness, understanding, and love, so we can live deeply in each moment of our lives, right where we are.

    Practical, memorable and clear
A hard book to put down and best enjoyed when read slowly. The book you’ll read once and reference forever.

Very well written for modern times and a global audience
Many Buddhist books are written in that folksy way with lots of old stories which aren’t as relatable today. I believe this author had younger students who helped transform his writings into something very clear and useable, without losing the fundamental teachings of Buddhism.

    medicine for worriers
This is a wonderful tool for people who struggle…so for all humans. I thought meditation and mindfulness were garbage in younger years. Contempt prior to investigation cost me years of a better existence. This is a book I will read over and over again.

    Soothed my Difficulty with Grief
Thich Nhat Hanh’s words about impermanence, and its application to death, and how we cope with death, were extremely helpful perspectives for me. I have been dealing with overwhelming emotions in the face of my loss of a loved one, and struggle with finding “purpose,” or “comfort” in his death, as I am not religious. I would consider myself agnostic, leaning towards atheist, but lately am trying to open my mind to religion’s teachings, even if I cannot get behind organized religion. This is why a non-theistic religion like Buddhism intrigues me, and as a beginner in the teachings, I find TNH’s words simple, yet revolutionary. He writes in a way that makes you wonder how you could have overlooked such a simple way of looking at the world, and have over complicated it so often. The stories are pleasant and made me smile while reading them, the tangible tactics such as walking meditation are useful, and the words offered on enjoying life, are exactly what I needed to hear. Definitely worth picking up the hardcover, because I want to keep this book for a long time.

A deep explanation for a simple life
We must somehow get away from technology and regain our normal and natural interactions with life, people and all things related to Mother Earth.

    Excellent writer
This book teaches you about looking at life beyond our conventional understanding about: birth, death, aging, emotions etc. I’m a spiritual person and live my life mindfully and with contentment. But I gained a deeper understanding about Buddhism and similar practices. It a good read for everyone.

If you are a human who is alive and want to live with joy and presence, this book is for you. If you feel disconnected, isolated and sad this book is for you. If you have lost loved ones or are anxious about your own mortality, this book is for you. I love everything about The art of Living. If I were to only be able to have one book or recommend one book for the rest of my life, this is the book I would choose without hesitation. In reading it I felt a deeper connection to the earth, to nature, to my ancestors. I felt comforted and soothed by the concepts so eloquently described that nothing dies that there is only transformation. It has given me a far deeper experience of peace andpresence. When I finished it, I went back to the beginning and have been underlining what speaks to me in rainbow pencil, some pages are all underlined. This book has been a revelation and a balm. It has guided me to a peaceful place among all things during a very challenging time in my life. I am forever grateful for the ripples of healing in Thich Nhat Hahn’s words. As he beautifully describes, what he shares goes on long after his body was transformed, and humble review reader, in your own way, so will you. If you choose to live your life fully, this is a wise, warm and welcoming companion. I recommend it to everyone. Don’t hesitate, let yourself receive the magic.
