Helpful guide to filling in writing curriculum gaps, but…
I’ve been teaching middle school ELA for 7 years. Teaching essay-writing is always a struggle for students and for me. My district has followed a certain writing program for the last 10 or so years, with varying degrees of success. My area has a high population of English language learners, so this is a factor to consider when planning writing lessons.I really appreciate the early chapters on explicitly teaching concepts such as complete sentences vs. fragments and sentence expansion. I do see the value in the single-paragraph and multi-paragraph outlines. However, this is not sufficient for the planning process for secondary grades. Out of the whole book, there was only about a page dedicated to teaching students how to use evidence and cite sources correctly, when this is one of the big struggles with teaching writing to middle schoolers. The SPO and MPO do not adequately address separating students’ own elaboration from their sources, in my opinion. I was hoping for tips that are simpler than some of the very complicated planning sheets we are currently teaching students, but not quite this simple. All in all, this book is a great resource when it comes to teaching the foundational writing skills that are so lacking in many upper grade students, and there are also many valuable resources when it comes to differentiating. I did appreciate that elementary and secondary grades were addressed in every section of the book, with plenty of examples. This will be helpful in supplementing my current lesson plans and writing curriculum.

Transformed my students writing!
As a first year, third grade teacher, trying to wrap my head around teaching 8/9 year olds how to write quality work was daunting. But TWR gives great techniques and strategies to get students OF ALL AGES writing! I will never not use TWR in my classroom!

Excellent Book
I homeschool my second graders, and as English is not my first language, writing formal essays in English can often feel daunting. To help us get started, I sought effective writing strategies, and this book has proven to be an invaluable resource. It is suitable for students as young as kindergarten, with the book recommending the introduction of sentence writing as early as elementary school. The teaching methods are clear, easy to follow, and supported by numerous examples and downloadable templates from the publisher’s website. We now practice writing daily, and my children thoroughly enjoy the activities, as they are both engaging and easily achievable for them.

I am excited to use this with my students
I just took the training that goes along with this book and I love the structure this offers. It breaks down the writing process for students in manageable bits that allows them to be successful.

***This is my first Amazon review, as I don’t usually write them, so let it be a testament to how excellent TWR 2.0 is***As a teacher of students with high literacy needs, the 1st ed. of TWR was already a godsend! It empowered me with the skills to integrate writing instruction alongside the intense demands of the secondary curriculum. It not only transformed my students’ writing development but also how they saw themselves as learners—I am forever grateful to TWR.Given how ‘revolutionary’ (pun intended) the 1st ed. was, I questioned what the 2nd ed. could offer. However, just from flicking through, it’s clear that this new release is far from simply an extension of the 1st ed. TWR literally JUMPS from the page in this technicolour edition filled with student examples and teacher tips.Calling this a ‘2nd ed.’ does an injustice to what the new release truly provides: the Hochman Method remastered. Not only has the sequence been reorganised, but there are NEW STRATEGIES to scaffold students’ writing development further. To any school or educator utilising TWR, this new release is ESSENTIAL to ensure the method’s full potential can come to fruition.

The techniques are very practical, student friendly and I have used this text for teaching Year 7 Film Podcasts, Year 8 Response paragraphs to the novel, Year 9 Public Essay (Internet article) on Fantasy and as preparation for the Year 10 Analytical Essay in response to the novel. A copy of this text should be used in every school!

This book is an eye opener to discover why some students are having difficulty improving their writing. It is a hard skill to teach since there are many skills to build at the same time. I have gained new insight and ideas. The focus though is for students in junior grades and above.
