From Amie McNee, the voice behind Inspired to Write, a manifesto on the vital, human importance of creating, with guidance for all artists in all endeavors, whether they’re starting their journey or seeking a fresh perspective.

In We Need Your Art,Amie McNee calls artists and aspiring artists of all kinds to do the work they’re meant to do: create.

Using her own experiences as a novelist and the inspiration she’s shared as a creative coach, Amie guides you on why we need your art and how you can make it happen—starting with a two-week reset plan to help you kick-start your creative habit. This isn’t about writing your great novel in a month or painting a masterpiece in a flurry of inspiration. Rather, this process is about practicing small, sustainable creative steps every day over time—five hundred words of writing each day, a pencil sketch every evening—so that you avoid burnout, produce consistent, reliable content on your own terms, and begin to see yourself as an artist.

With frank and empowering conversations on the many issues creatives face, including impostor syndrome, perfectionism, procrastination, and the inner critic, as well as invitations to coronate yourself and celebrate your ambition, Amie provides the framework and encouragement you need to begin to take your art seriously. Each chapter also includes journal prompts that help you apply what you have learned to your new life.

We Need Your Art is a revolutionary reprogramming of everything we have been taught and told about being a creative, removing the shame and fear we may feel at dubbing ourselves artists and inviting us to create proudly, with celebration. This book is a warm hug, a pep talk, the wise teacher you always wanted, the loving parent you needed, and the fire in your belly that you need to get roaring.

    Truly Impactful!
I read this nonfiction book like a fiction book that would keep up late at night reading. I wanted to read everything and I couldn’t stop.I did stop briefly to do a bit of the journal prompts. I still have many more to do, but I’m excited to do so. The prompts so far led me to journal so many pages. These prompts have unlocked something within me. I can’t wait to see what happens next in my indie author career, thanks to this book.I also noticed some similar themes within this book to my nonfiction book WRITING MATTERS AND SO DO YOU. I’m thankful that my book can be a Comp Title cousin to this amazing book.

Artist, this book was written for you (yes, you)
Amie McNee’s book will change your perspective on creating art for the better. She highlights the humanity in art. The need to discover our own rhythm. The need society has for art- because art builds empathy and creates change. The way many people were taught to create goes against our individual natures. We may feel overwhelmed or burnt out because of it. Amie’s writing gently guides the creative through a discovery of their own artistic practice. She’s encouraging, witty, and relatable- which makes the book a joy to read.I know I will be returning to these chapters many times in my creative life. There are so many passages that speak to the artist I was as a child, who I am now, and whoever I will be in 5 years. This book isn’t a read once and done. It’s a valuable companion for any artist as they move through their creative life. There’s a line written just for you in this book. It will jump out to you, arrest your heart, and make you take a moment to breathe. For me, it was page 91- ā€œYou could have been prolific, but instead you asked yourself to be perfect.ā€ In one sentence, so much of my perspective changed for the better. Also, shoutout to Amie and her partner, James Winestock’s, podcast ā€œUnpublishedā€. They expand on their own creative processes and other parts of the book. It’s a fun, scrappy, and insightful listen while you’re making art!

    Embrace your creativity
Though quite different in tone, I have to say Amie McNee’s We Need Your Art left me with a similar feeling as Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art. This is a book about embracing your love of creativity—no matter what form it takes: writing, music, painting, etc.—and pushing through the resistance. Why? Because it’s important…to you and to society as a whole. McNee is by no means saying any and everyone will see success or ever earn a dime in their area of passion but rather how and why the very act of being a creative is important and helpful, both personally and to society in general. And in that sense I found it quite inspiring. I’d like to thank PENGUIN GROUP Viking Penguin | Penguin Life, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an eARC of We Need Your Art: Stop Messing Around and Make Something.
